Living in the Washington, DC area provides families with a wealth of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. From parks and gardens to historical sites and recreational areas, there’s no shortage of family-friendly activities to partake in. If you’re looking to spend quality time with your kids while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, here are some fantastic outdoor activities to consider in the DC area.

Watch Airplanes at Gravelly Point 

Gravelly Point is the best location for littles to get an up close view of airplanes taking off and landing at National Airport. Plus Gravelly Point is a great place for a picnic or to fly kites or even ride bikes with the family along the Potomac River. Or grab a bite to eat a Cat Boat Pizza which is very close by and has great views of the water and planes, plus it has a nice grassy area for kids to play! Also near Gravelly Point, kids can sign up for sailing school in the Washington Sailing Marina

Catch a Nat’s Game

The whole family will have a blast at Nat’s park. Head to the stadium for an afternoon of baseball and enjoy tons of great food options including a classic hotdog (would it be summer without one??).

Hop Aboard the Water Taxi 

Boat between Old Town, the Wharf, Georgetown, and National Harbor on a water taxi. Ride the Ferris Wheel at National Harbor. Feed the ducks on the waterfront in Old Town. Play mini golf or make s’mores at one of the seasonal pop-ups at the Wharf, or indulge in the Georgetown food festival or world class shopping.

Play at the National Harbor

Speaking of National Harbor, there are a plethora of outdoor activities for families here. Let the kids run wild at the playground, take a ride on the Capital Wheel for stunning views of the Potomac River, or rent paddleboats and explore the waterfront. With an array of dining options and shops, the National Harbor is a one-stop destination for a day of family fun.

Pop-ups at the Wharf

The Wharf along the waterfront in DC offers a ton of fun pop-ups for kids. This year Pixar putt-putt in the Summer was a blast and s’mores and ice-skating in the Winter was a must-do activity! 

Explore Del Ray’s Art on the Avenue, Brews and Bands, and Dog Festival

Every first Thursday in Del Ray, the Avenue shuts down for local artists to display their crafts as well as fitness class demonstrations and food deals. And don’t miss the annual family friendly event, Brews and Bands which features local bands and deals at bars. If you have a furry friend the kids will love bringing them to the Del Ray Dog Festival where they can teach the dog new tricks, or purchase pet portraits, treats, and dog collars. Del Ray also features a Farmer’s Market every Saturday.

Drive to Middleburg

The kids will love the beautiful drive seeing farmland and horses. Once there, explore the town. There is plenty of shopping including kids clothing and toy stores. Checkout a vineyard while you’re there where the kids can play in the fields and everyone can enjoy live music.  

Visit the National Zoo

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is a perfect destination for a day of outdoor fun with the kids. With over 2,700 animals to see, including giant pandas, elephants, and lions, the zoo offers an educational and entertaining experience for children of all ages. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Kids’ Farm, where little ones can get up close and personal with farm animals.

Play at The Smithsonian Sculpture Garden 

This captivating outdoor space in DC offers a unique and enriching experience for kids. With its diverse collection of sculptures and art installations, the garden provides an opportunity for children to engage with art in a hands-on and immersive way, fostering a deeper connection with the artwork. Plus there are great restaurant and snack options close by and often food trucks lined-up right outside. Also don’t miss Jazz in the Garden which takes place on Fridays between May 31 and mid-August is also a great family activity.
