Who doesn’t love a good sandwich? November 3, National Sandwich Day, is the perfect day to celebrate sandwiches of all kinds. Whether you like them hot or cold, on bread, bagel, or baguette, there are so many amazing sandwiches in Alexandria and Arlington and the rest of our region out there to try. Here are a few of our team’s favorites around town. Enjoy!
Lost Dog Cafe

Local favorite Lost Dog Cafe offers truly a mind-blowing amount of sandwiches (49 to be exact) — truly something for everyone! From traditional favorites to unique options like the Biting Chihuahua (Grilled chicken, white onions, and melted mozzarella, topped with black beans, corn, and hot cherry peppers), everyone will be happy here. Vegetarians will love the many meatless options, including The Greyhound, made with avocado, spinach, mushrooms, and tomato with melted provolone on a warm pita with avocado ranch. The Peoples Drug

Sara highly recommends this reimagined general-store in the heart of Old Town for truly amazing sandwiches. Check out the Grilled Ham and Cheese with Gruyere or the Roasted Garlic and Egg Salad sandwich. Whatever you order, be sure to also order a side of the irresistible truffle fries! Insider tip: The Peoples Drug offers a fantastic lineup of unique cocktails as well such as a Smoked Apple Cider Margarita. The restaurant is open Tuesday – Friday from 3 p.m.- 10 p.m. and on weekends from 11 a.m.- 10 p.m. 
Landini Brothers Restaurant
115 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314
This King Street landmark open since 1979, serves amazing paninis at lunchtime highly recommended by Allison! For a hearty lunch, try the Vitello Arrosto, with roasted veal and grilled portabella mushroom and a creamy spread. On the lighter side, order the Vegetale alla Griglia panini with grilled portabella mushroom, eggplant, zucchini, carrot, and goat cheese. Landini Brothers boasts a tremendous wine list, with more than 30 wines by the glass and over 400 by the bottle. Landini Brothers is open for lunch seven days a week.
Sherwood Gourmet
900 Andrus Road, Suite 3, Alexandria, VA 22306
Jamyn loves this deli located in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria. It offers an extensive variety of both hot and cold sandwiches. Be sure to try the local favorite, the Mount Vernon, made with turkey, apples, cheddar, and the deli’s secret sauce on a baguette. A wide selection of side salads and desserts are also available. Sherwood Gourmet also serves its breakfast sandwiches all day long! Sherwood Gourmet is open seven days a week and offers convenient online ordering.
The Italian Store
Two Locations (5837 Washington Blvd and 3123 Lee Highway, Arlington, VA). 
Local residents, often transplants from the Northeast, flock to this hidden gem in Arlington. The Italian Store’s signature sandwiches are The Milano, with two kinds of Italian ham, provolone, and Genoa salami, and The Capri, with a Prosciutto Genoa salami blend, provolone, and spiced capicola. Hot Italian subs are also available as well as made-to-order cold subs. Insider tip: if you’re looking for amazing authentic New York-style pizza, this is your place! The Italian Store is open Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. -7 p.m. and from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sundays.
Balducci’s
600 Franklin Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 (plus locations in Bethesda and McLean)
Sue recommends the deli counter at Balducci’s for its great selection of made-to-order, creative artisanal sandwiches. The menu includes seasonal favorites like a Turkey, Pumpkin & Bacon Sandwich. A variety of side salads and a salad bar will round out your meal. The best part of Balducci’s? You can also pick up whatever groceries you need or peruse Balducci’s fantastic wine section to try something new.
Market 2 Market
116 E. Del Ray, Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22301
Mac and Jamyn love Market 2 Market over in Del Ray. Located right next to St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub, Market 2 Market features Italian-style subs, hot subs, and salads. They also have more than 200 beers available for purchase as well as deli meats and snacks. Several of their sandwiches are also named after Alexandria streets and neighborhoods.
