Fitness in Alexandria
There are so many wonderful places for fitness in Alexandria (and beyond!). Here are some of our favorites.
SUE
I work with Trevor at XSport Fitness on King Street. I like it because the gym is open 24 hours and seven days a week, which I need with my schedule! It is a very large facility with plenty of machines and with three floors and a variety of ways to work out. Their offerings include a basketball court, rock climbing wall, pool, and even a sauna! Xsport offers a wide variety of classes throughout the day. They also have a daycare and a spa.
I‘ve been going to XSport for about seven years. I enjoy working with Trevor — he focuses on what you want to accomplish. Lately, I have been working on my arms and my stomach. I can hold a plank for at least a minute if not longer. I have come a long way!
ALLISON
To mix things up, I’ve also started attending classes at Barre3, a studio at the corner of Duke and S. Washington Streets. Barre3 offers a challenging blend of yoga, cardio, pilates, and weight training. Learn more about our team’s visit to Barre3 here.

In addition to working for The Goodhart Group, I am also a certified yoga instructor. I enjoy visiting Old Town’s yoga studios whenever I can. There are so many great options (you can read about them here)! I also love to run or walk with friends along the Mt. Vernon Trail or along Little Hunting Creek.

I live in the lovely community of Belle View right off the George Washington Parkway with all of its wonderful trails and parks. When the weather is ideal (for me, that’s when temperatures are cooler), I enjoy taking extended walks down by the river. It’s always so peaceful and the fresh air really helps to clear my head — it feels like deep breathing.
When I’m not taking a stroll around my neighborhood, I attend Gold’s Gym on Richmond Highway. I have been a member since it first opened. After just completing a major renovation last year, the gym offers a vast array of options to help you with your fitness goals through machines and equipment, classes, a private women’s gym for those of us that are more shy, and one-on-one personal training. No matter your fitness level, there is something there for everyone. Four years ago, I decided I was really going go for it and get fit. I’d always been an active person but things have, how can I put delicately, “shifted,” since getting older.
I enlisted the help of a personal trainer, Rob McCoy who is still the Fitness Director there, and he was wonderful — very devoted to helping me hit my goals and extremely tough when he noticed I was slacking. Rob was always showing me how to properly use the machines, explained what the benefits were for exercises being done and so much more. He even became a friend. With his guidance, I lost 20 lbs. and defined my body in ways I never knew possible. Unfortunately, I’m only human, those results no longer exist. It’s a new year and I have new goals and considering Gold’s Gym and Robert McCoy helped me reach those goals in the past, I have all the confidence that they will help me reach my future goals. New year equals a fresh start for all!
