Looking for a quick, easy and relatively inexpensive way to spruce up your home? Look up! Are your home’s light fixtures in need of an upgrade? Updating lighting in your home can make a world of difference. Lighting plays an important role in the look and feel of your home. Your lighting choices can complete the look you are striving for in your home…be it modern, vintage, or classic.
WHAT TO CHANGE
To give your lighting a fresh look, change out any lighting fixtures showing their age (think brass fixtures or vanity lighting). It may be your chandeliers, bathroom lighting, kitchen pendant lights, overhead lighting or wall sconces. When choosing your new fixtures, stick to classic or on-trend choices such as:
- chandelier style fixtures
- rubbed bronze fixtures
- industrial design
- geometric or irregularly shaped fixtures
- nature-inspired designs and materials
- adding spotlights / special feature lighting

OTHER LIGHTING PROJECTS
Consider adding recessed lighting to your main living areas if you have not already. Adding spot lighting adds pleasant ambient or accent/spot lighting and can create the illusion of more space. The dimming effects of recessed lighting allow for more control over your space and its atmosphere. Homeadvisor.com estimates that basic pot lights will run you $20 – $60 per light, with an additional $100-$200 for professional installation by an electrician.
Another small lighting project with a big punch is adding under cabinet lighting in your kitchen. Not only will it add a cozy glow to your kitchen, it will provide the task lighting that many older kitchens lack. Click here for a tutorial on tackling this project yourself.
While you’re at it, replace your exterior entryway light fixture as well. Doing so will give the exterior of your home a bit of a facelift. Consider adding walkway lighting if you don’t already have it.
LASTLY…GO GREEN
When making these upgrades, try to use “green” lighting options such as compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) or LED bulbs. Both options will save you money on your energy bills!
